About the Race
The 2011 Blitz Duathlon was held on September 17, 2011 at Allen Bill Pond (just outside Calgary, AB near Bragg Creek in the Elbow Valley region of Kananaskis). A new course this year, it consisted of a 6.8km trail run around Fullerton Loop, a 19km road bike down/back Highway 66, and a 2.2km run around Allen Bill Pond to finish.
A beautiful day again, it was a shotgun start for 168 athletes. They started off down the trail towards the first challenge, a ~1km hill up Fullerton Loop! It was definitely more challenging than the last year's hill up Diamond T loop, but the scenery was much nicer. Thanks to one of our volunteers, motivational posters and music helped to keep athletes pushing themselves until they reached the top. Once at the top, the rest of the loop was comparitively easy as athletes made their way back through the start line to the transition area to hop on their bikes for the next leg.
The bike leg of the course led athletes west down Highway 66 towards Elbow Falls until the turnaround point at the Powerface trailhead. To drive this stretch of highway, it seems like it consists of a few rolling hills, but it is actually an elevation gain of 535ft! So athletes had to keep pushing for the first 10km, but were able to make up some time on the way back to the transition area.
Most athletes really enjoyed the last run leg of the course - short, and fairly flat, athletes ran around Allen Bill Pond. A sprint to the finish brought athelets back to the starting line. After the race, athletes enjoyed the sunny weather and a delicious beef on a bun BBQ.
